This was a really good day in terms of my photography. I'd been contacted by Belfast Roller Derby about having some of my photos used in the main local newspaper here in Northern Ireland, a combination of bout shots and some of the headshots taken over the last month or two. I've been shooting at roller derby for just under one year and enjoyed it thoroughly - learning loads about shooting action under difficult lighting and taking portraits for specific purposes and with a certain "feel" to them. I guess I fell in love very quickly with the Belfast Roller Derby team - they are an amazing bunch and probably the most dedicated group I've had the pleasure of meeting. As an amateur photographer, I have the luxury of only shooting what I want to shoot. Putting in the hours on roller derby has taught me a lot and what's more to the point, every minute has been an absolute pleasure. Being asked to do the shot for the next bout poster was a great compliment, and getting the chance to work out this shot was not only a great challenge but one of the most interesting evenings I've had.
Today I got to see my shots in print in the biggest local paper we have. One on the front page, one on the front page of the features section and another 8 shots in the feature itself. This is the lead shot from the features section:
They look great, the article itself is fantastic and I'm hoping it does a hell of a lot to raise the profile of roller derby in Belfast. Lets hope they let me be their official photographer for a long time to come.
